Marcus earns juris doctor degree, gay law award
Cleveland-The Case Western Reserve University School of Law awarded Nancy C. Marcus the degree of juris doctor at the annual commencement convocation on Sunday, May 18. The ceremony took place at The Temple near the university's campus.

She celebrated the day with her family.
During the conferring of awards, Marcus was recognized as the 1996 winner of the Lesbian and Gay Law Alliance Award, given to the student who prepares the best paper on gay and lesbian issues. Her essay dealt with the significance of Romer v. Evans-the 1996

Supreme Court decision that overturned Colorado's anti-gay Amendment 2-and the impact it will have on future vay and lesbian civil rights cases.
Marcus did her undergraduate work at St. John's College in Annapolis, Md., and the James Madison College at Michigan State University, where she earned her B.A. in political theory and constitutional democracy in 1994. She has been active in Cleveland's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community since her arrival in 1994 and was one of the few out queer activists at Case Law School during her three years there.
Marcus has accepted a staff attorney position with Southeast Ohio Legal Services Association in New Philadelphia, beginning in August. The primary work of the organization is providing legal services to those who would not otherwise be able to afford legal counsel. They often deal with victims of domestic violence, individuals involved in custody challenges and landlord-tenant disputes, and they help people navigate through the maze of bureaucratic paperwork involved with applying for government assistance.
In addition to her Legal Aid work, Marcus plans to volunteer her time and legal services to organizations such as Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund and the ACLU's Lesbian and Gay Rights Project, organizations committed to achieving the full civil rights of lesbian, gay, and bisexual men and
women.
